How To Make A Back To School Sign
Use materials laying around your house, and learn how to make an easy back-to-school sign with this DIY tutorial!
It is all things Back to School, and I finally decided to make my own back to school sign that I could re-use each year to document these precious moments!
This sign is super easy, and most of these materials you likely have laying around already which makes it even more cost effective and easy.

How to Make an Easy Back to School Sign
#1. Cut the drywall to 16″ x 16″.
To make the simplest version of this sign all you need is a pre-cut square piece of drywall (available at most any hardware stores.)
I know Home Depot carries them in 2x2ft and our local hardware store, Bombergers, has them in 16″x16″ the paint department. I got mine from Bombergers which was the perfect size!

#2. Prime the drywall.
Be sure to find a sweet helper (not included on the materials list ;-), and prime the drywall squares.
Prime the whole way around the exposed edges as well to seal them.
Let them dry.

#3. Paint with chalkboard paint.
Then paint them with as many coats of chalkboard paint as you need.
I ultimately ended up doing 3 coats. Remember to paint the edges of the drywall as well. This will keep them from chipping.

#4. Add a finishing touch
You can finish as simply as you want – glue a bow or faux flower in the corner, add burlap or fabric around the edges etc.
I put a frame around the edge by cutting a piece of 11/16 in. x 11/16 in. x 96 in. outside corner molding that we had lying around with a miter saw and used liquid nails to glue it to the drywall.

#5. Mark out your sign.
From here you can do whatever you want! I marked two horizontal lines and then one vertical down the center to create my boxes.
Whatever design you end up going with trace it all first with a pencil before you go over it with your permanent white marker.
