5 Ideas to design a Relaxing Bedroom
With work and socialization only a cell phone’s length away, rest and relaxation can feel like a luxury of days gone by.
In our constant state of motion, even the bedroom becomes a place of entertainment, work, and bright lights making stillness and deep sleep an elusive reality which is a problem considering poor sleep has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and behavioral problems in children and teens.
Sleep is such an important element to living WELL that I wrote an entire article on 13 tips to sleep better at nightย so that you can maximize fat loss and improve their quality of life in all areas.
So when Wayfair reached out to me about writing an article on refreshing a bedroom I was excited to share my practical and effective ideas to design a relaxing bedroom!
I hope you try these 5 ideas to design your own relaxing bedroom!

5 Ideas to design a Relaxing Bedroom
#1. Sleep with a Weighted Blanket
In general, people report feeling as though they have gotten a better night’s sleep when they use a weighted blanket (to maximize this strategy keep your room temperature on the cooler side).
As a rule the weighted blanket should be 5 to 10 percent of your body weight and should also fit snugly to the size of the bed (not appropriate for children under 2 years of age).
Check out the most popular weighted blankets on Wayfair!

#2. De-Clutter with storage
Did you know research has shown that de-cluttering a space can reduce stress which in turn helps you sleep better at night?
Go through your closet and bag any items that you have not worn or that have not fit in over a year.
Zach and I go through our closet and our kids closets about twice a year (before winter and before summer) and bag clothing/shoes/toys and schedule porch pick up with Salvation Army.
It is SO easy!
After you weed out your closet consider de-cluttering what remains by adding efficient storage solutions.
When we renovated the master closet in our French Country Cottage fixer upper we ripped out the old double bi-fold closets and created an open-concept design using Closet Maid’s Suite Symphony system to maximize the space.
Check out all the options with Closet Maid from Wayfair. I promise they are not that hard to install!

#3. Beautify with a statement piece
C.S. Lewis once said, “We do not want merely to see beauty . . . We want something else which can hardly be put into words โ to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it.โ
Someone also once said that “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
So what do you find beautiful?
- Artwork?
- A specific style of decor?
- Pictures of your children/grandchildren?
- Memories from your wedding day?
- Flowers?
Choose one thing inspires you with it’s beauty.
Something that fills you with a sense of warmth and home, and make it the focal point of your bedroom.
- A canvas picture of your family above the bed.
- A new headboard or a rug in your favorite decor style.
- A faux bouquet of your favorite flowers.
- A piece of art that speaks to you.
- An item mounted in a shadow box above your bed that memorializes a special memory.
Explore Wayfair’s endless possibilities, and make your “beauty statement.”

#5. Calm with candles
If you have been around these parts for a while, then you know I have a small (or large) obsession with candles.
One of my very favorite ways to use candles is with sconces on the wall.
I don’t know what it is.
Maybe candle lit wall sconces transport my French Country loving heart back to a time when life was slower and the light of a flickering candle beckoned the end of the day with a warm, soft glow.
I am not suggesting you carelessly light an open candle, fall asleep and burn your house down, but I am suggesting that once in a while you ditch modern lighting and welcome the night with the relaxing flicker of a flame.
I repurposed these wall scones from a thrift store, and the tea lights put off the most beautiful glow on our bedroom walls.
Because these are contained on occasion Zach and I will actually fall asleep to a candle-lit room.ย #keepromancealive
