Anxiety is the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorder in the United States affecting over 40 million adults yearly or 18% of America aged 18 and older.  When the body is in a chronically elevated state of anxiety, cortisol, a stress hormone, is constantly in circulation contributing to elevated blood pressure, increased blood sugar, excess gastric acid causing stomach cramping and chest tightness.  This also affect sleep.

Technique

The 4-7-8 breathing technique is very simple.

  • Inhale deeply through pursed lips for 4 seconds.
  • Hold that breath for 7 seconds.
  • Exhale slowly through pursed lips for 8 seconds.

Repeat this cycle up to 4 times.
