Triple Cheese Fondue Recipe
I love cheese. Oh how I love cheese. I feel a song coming on.
But before I start singing let me share with you this cheese fondue recipe that will make you want to break out into song while doing a happy dance with every bite.
For several decades my mom has hosted a cheese and chocolate fondue every Christmas for their closest friends, and once Zach and I owned our first home we carried on the tradition.
Over the years I have made some adjustments myself to create what I believe to be the most delicious cheese fondue I have ever tasted. It is ALWAYS a hit and easily serves 12 with a little leftover.
Paired with an assortment of meats, vegetables, and bread this is a cheese lover’s dream come true!

My cooking philosophy is to keep it “healthy and easy.”
Recipes at Hammers N Hugs will include all-natural ingredients that can often be frozen and have been tested and approved by friends and family!
Take it from me you will want to shred your onion first because your food processor will be very sticky after you shred 4 pounds of cheese.
Speaking of 4 pounds of cheese. Mmm . . . mmm.
Shred and set aside.
Melt the butter and add the shredded onions. As noted in the printable recipe, make sure to drain all of the liquid from the shredded onions first.
Next add your flour and sour cream.
Gradually add the cheese and keep stirring until creamy.
Last add the chives and keep the heat on low until you are ready to serve it!

Equipment
- Food processor
- Fondue pot
Ingredients
- 1/2 c butter
- 4 onions, diced
- 3 tbsp flour
- 3 c sour cream
- 2 lbs extra sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 1/2 lbs Gruyere cheese, shredded
- 1/2 lb smoked Gouda, shredded
- 1/2 c chives
Instructions
- Dice or shred the onions. You can use a food processor for this if you would like. If you use a food processor, then be sure to drain all of the liquid out. Set aside.
- Using a food processor, shred the 4 lbs of cheese. Set aside.
- In a large pot, melt the butter and saute the diced/shredded onions for 2 minutes or until browned.
- Stir the flour and the sour cream. Continue stirring for approximately 2 minutes.
- Gradually add the cheese stirring until smooth.
- Add the chives.
- Keep on low heat and stir occasionally until ready to transfer directly to heated fondue pots.
Freezing Instructions:
- Allow fondue to cool completely in microwave and freezer safe glass bowl. Seal tightly and place in freezer. Can be safely deep frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight. Reheat in microwave or over low heat on the stove as needed.
