Farmhouse Style Bedroom Closet Idea
Check out the before and after of this farmhouse-style bedroom closet idea with exposed 150-year-old barn beams!
Good morning and happy Wednesday!
Today I am showing off our finished farmhouse style master closet!!
If you are following along with our French Country Cottage fixer-upper (check out the before tour here), then you remember the master bedroom was small with old purple carpet and side-by-side double closets with bi-fold doors from the sixties.
Check out the before and afters of this farmhouse-style master closet!
The first thing we did was to remove the carpet and the bi-fold doors.
We quickly discovered there was beautifully preserved red oak hardwood flooring underneath all of that carpet!
By the way, be sure to read my post on Choosing the Best Farmhouse Style Floor stain,

Deconstruction
Let the construction begin!
My plan was to open the closets from floor to ceiling into the rest of the bedroom and frame it out with old barn beams to help define the space.
What a difference taking it up to the ceiling makes.
Primer is on! This picture looks like a creepy isolation room in a hospital ward or something. Nope. Just our bedroom.

Barn Beams
I found these 150 year old barn beams for sale on Facebook marketplace.
Zach and I – correction – Zach cut them down to size and loaded our treasures into our amazing mini-van turned work truck (check out my review on our Chrysler Pacifica here)!
Installing authentic barn beams on the ceiling is not a DIY project for a beginner, but for a tutorial on how to install barn beams on a ceiling click here!

Closet Organization System
Once we framed out the closet space the next step was to install the closet system.
We bought the Closet Maid Suite Symphony 25-Inch Closet Organizer with Shelves, 2 Doors and 4 Drawers in Pure White to organize the closet on Zach’s side.
For my side, we bought the Closet Maid Suite Symphony 25-Inch Closet Organizer with Shelves in Pure White. for closet organization.
The shelves can be customized with these doors, various size drawers, or in my case, shoe shelves!
The above shelf unit fit 9 of these shoe shelves. Each shelf fits approximately 3 pairs of shoes facing inward.
As per the usual putting these shelving units together was a dusty and messy family affair.
It’s ok Lily. I feel that way when looking at instruction manuals too.
Gracie helped put in all the nails!
Caleb helped destroy all the boxes!
Lily helped with the cuteness factor.
And Mommy put in lots and lots of screws. But in the end . . . worth it!!

Closet Before and After
His Side Before and After Closet Organization
Zach’s wardrobe consists primarily of slim fit non-iron dress shirts, 5 million coaching polos and his favorite Under Armour Pants.
Also it made me laugh because despite my best efforts to stage the closet I totally missed the football wedged in between the upper baskets on Zach’s side.
Footballs everywhere. College size, pro size (Go Eagles!), kid-size, baby size . . . #somanyfootballs
Her Side Before and After closet Organization
What is it about shoes neatly organized by color that makes my heart so happy?
I wish I could say those are all of my shoes, but if I am being honest I removed a basket and all of my boots which are sitting on the floor for a cleaner picture.
Sadly this is after donating over a dozen pairs of shoes prior to moving.
I was determined to downsize my closet including shoes believe it or not.
Quality over quantity! The above picture is blurry, but those black Hunter rain boots have a wedge heel and are one of my favorites!
They were from Nordstrom and out of stock now, but a cheaper knock-off version can be found here.
The plan is to install floating shelves with the leftover barn beams on this wall to set my boots on.
Voila!
I love boots and stilettos.
A classy stiletto is my greatest weakness which is really unfortunate because I work in an emergency department where there is no place for high heels.
My favorite pair of pumps – Calvin Klein’s Gayle Pump in caramel. This is by far the most comfortable pair of heels I own, and they come in tons of different colors.
Another favorite pair of shoes that I would buy in every color if it wasn’t totally excessive are these Wedge Boots by Sketchers.
They are incredibly comfortable, feel more like sneakers, and also come in a variety of colors.
These gorgeous cream-colored pumps were my grandmother’s that she had restored and given to me.
They are about 60 years old and still going strong!
I wanted to install mini chandeliers on each side, but there just wasn’t room with the beam and the highest shelf.
So we left an exposed Edison bulb on each side which has also worked out well.
Opening up this closet space made the whole room feel bigger. Check out our full master bedroom reveal!
