Cover an unsightly black tv screen, brighten a room, and hide the tv cabinet with this budget-friendly DIY.

One of the first things every new homeowner thinks about when designing a family room is “Where do I put the TV?”

For many of us then, the follow up question is “How do I make it as inconspicuous as possible?”

I, for one, do not want the focal point of my main living space to be a piece of technology, nor do I love the aesthetic of large black rectangles.

So, I came up with the simplest of solutions that works beautifully for any tv cabinet and also functions to lighten up a room!

Before

When we first bought this house I had a terrible time figuring out how where to put the tv.

In the end, we decided to build a corner tv cabinet to maintain the open footprint of the room as much as possible.

While building it into the corner did make the room feel larger, we left the tv cabinet uncovered, leaving that large unsightly black screen exposed.

So . . . my solution?

Cafe curtains!

1. Measure the width of the tv cabinet opening.

Prior to buying a cafe curtain rod and the curtains you need to know exactly the width that will require covering.

In our case, the opening was 44 inches (our TV is a 42″ screen).

2. Attach the 2 cafe rod brackets to the ceiling of each cabinet corner.

I used this cafe rod and brackets to attach the curtains.

3. Slide the curtains onto the rod.

Just another reminder to measure TWICE.

Make sure the length and width of the curtains will sufficiently hide the tv cabinet opening.

4. Hang the curtain rod!

And voila!

Cheap. Easy. Efficient.
