DIY Birchwood Centerpiece
Set a beautiful winter woodland tablescape for the holidays with this easy, budget-friendly birchwood centerpiece.
Last year I was honored to have our home featured in the Christmas edition of American Farmhouse Style Magazine. For the shoot, I wanted to create a woodland tablescape that could be decorated for Christmas and then simplified to be enjoyed all winter long.
One of the elements of this tablescape I wanted to create was a birchwood centerpiece that I could use for white candle tapers.
I absolutely loved how it turned out, and now I am sharing this easy DIY with you.
Materials List:
- (3) 16-18” birch wood logs
- Jute rope
- Heavy-duty stapler or liquid nails
- 6 taper candles
- Power drill
- 7/8” wood drill bit
- Measuring tape

Birchwood Logs
Set two birch wood logs together and place the third on top. Tie the logs tightly with two pieces of Jute rope and staple or glue the ends together on the bottom of the stack.

2. Measure and mark the candle holes.
Find the center of the logs and mark it with a light x. Measure 1.5″ to the right and mark with a pen. This is where you will drill. Find the center and repeat the process to the left. These holes would be approximately 3 inches apart.
These holes are number 3 and 4 respectively. Measure another 3 inches to the right of hole #4 and mark. This is hole #5. Measure another 3 inches to the right and this is hole #6. Repeat on the left side for holes #2 and #1.

#3. Drill the holes.
Drill the 6 holes with a 7/8 wood drill bit approx 1″ deep.

#4. Place the tapers securely
Place the tapers and make sure they are tight. If the candles are a little loose, then heat the bottom of a candle with a lighter so the wax starts to melt and press it into the candle holder.
Root Candles have been my favorite for many years, but fair warning they are pricey.
Last step? Light your candles and enjoy a candle-lit dinner as a family.
