I was driving Gracie to her last day of summer camp when I saw this outdated but gorgeous solid wood round dining table on the side of the road labeled “FREE.” I pulled a U-turn and threw it in the back of my van much to the chagrin of my children who are convinced one day they will be driven out of the house due to lack of space thanks to these sidewalk treasures.

I knew I wanted to try Dixie Belle’s Voodoo “Au Naturel” Gel Stain, but wasn’t sure what I thought about it once I did. I polled you all on Instagram, and WOW, there was a resounding yes to the coastal vibe it was putting off.

Once I finished it with the white wax and satin clear coat it really grew on me. The mix of white paints also resulted in the perfect creamy white of the coastal furniture often found in beach houses.

I have been asked if I will sell this piece, but truth be told, thanks to your encouragement to keep going with it I ended up falling in love with it myself. Plus I am a sucker for round tables.

1. Sand top with 60/80 grit sandpaper.

Ideally, my belt sander would have been preferable to an orbital hand sander, but I forgot to buy sandpaper for it and didn’t feel like hauling my kids to the hardware store. #reallife

2. Apply Dixie Belle’s Voodoo Au Naturel Gel Stain.

I started with DB’s applicator pad to apply the “au naturel” stain and didn’t like it. As I have said many times before, there is no better way to apply stain than with a clean rag. It gives you more control over the finished look. I used a sprayer to keep the gel stain thin.

This was the part where I wasn’t sure that I liked the look, but you all said to keep going, and I am so glad I did!

3. Apply Dixie Belle’s white wax.

This is the step that made all the difference. The white wax added that white-washed coastal furniture beach vibe that I was going for.

4. Paint the table skirt and legs with Dixie Belle chalk paint in 50% fluff and 50% drop cloth.

I didn’t want a true white, but I also didn’t want a linen white, so I mixed 50/50 of Dixie Belle Fluff Chalk Paint and Dixie Belle Drop Cloth Chalk Paint, and it was the perfect creamy coastal white paint color.

5. Finish with Dixie Belle satin clear coat.

Satin is my favorite finish on any furniture. It brings the colors to life and also makes for easier cleaning than a flat finish. I added Dixie Belle Clear Coat IN Satin to the entire piece, over the paint as well, but I coated the top 3 times making sure to sand in between coats as noted below.
